What is web hosting?  Simply put, web hosting is a service providing the availability of space on a server connected to the Internet.  Ostensibly, this server space is used for hosting websites, although there are potentially numerous other reasons that one may want to employ the services of a web host.

There are many different types of web hosting available today.  This infographic endeavors to explain these different types of web hosting:

    Well done HostGator, only proves you keep track of the future and we can expect the best from you always.

    You forgot to add about CDN services.

    We are very happy with Google PSS services and have transitioned all our websites there.

    A great Server with HostGator turbocharged by Google PSS is the best combination we have experienced till now.

    Any Con’s for this ??

    And they forgot to add Shell Accounts with vhosts, as well as Jailed Shell Accounts:
    Shell Accounts w/ vhosts
    Pros:
    ✓ You can install your software like VPS (root or sudo access include*)
    ✓ You do not have kernel overheads like in VPS
    ✓ Inexpensive
    ✓ Hosting Comp. Manages hardware and main server Software
    ✓ Scaling may be possible (depends company)
    ✓ You can customize

    Cons:
    x *Some restrictions applies on server
    x Require Lots of Technical Knowledge to get started
    x Potential of overhaul from other users
    x You are responsible for software
    x CPU time/usage may be predefined

    Jailed Shell Accounts w/ vhosts
    ✓ Everything Positive on Shell Accounts
    ✓ No overhaul from users, since predefined CPU time/usage

    Cons:
    x Everything on Shell Accounts minus 3 and 5 (unless 5 is a minus for you)

    @Sudip Majhi
    Just link it

    @Harry
    I think they covered it with Cloud. But I hate the term CDN, they should be called what they are, mirror [file] providers.

    Well. I am experiencing the worst downtime with Hostgator. I guess you guys are migrating the VPS server to somewhere else. It has taken down my sites for hours, up for 1 hours with the new IPs and down for hours. It’s still not up at moment.

    This is really causing us troubles. I switch to Hostgator due to it’s reputation of up time on VPS and stability. Now I wonder what is going with Hostgator? Going down hill?

    1U of rack space averages about $125 per 1U, and a full rack for about $1000. I know of colo space in Colorado going for $40 per 1U of rackspace. There is a much quicker return on colo space if you’ve got a successful model and can push the customers.

    That being said, high levels of technical skills are also needed. I cannot stress that enough. It’s simply not a viable option for most people because of this. And if the datacenter isn’t nearby, be prepared to pay the datacenter hourly for any work required(if your location even offers this).

    Source; I’ve got colo space in Colorado and Chicago.

    Info graphics make information much more interesting to read. This is a great way to market information and services. Good job providing info on various information concerning web hosting, not just your run of the mill information.
