Ugliest Website Building Competition

Written by Justin G on December 21, 2007 – 6:00 pm -

Here at HostGator, we run across some pretty sad looking websites that could use some help sometimes. As I thought about how some people build and even sell horrible looking websites as a business, I thought it would be fun if we had a competition of who could build the ugliest website. The best part is we will be giving away a prize for it. The winner will receive a Free 1 year Swamp web hosting account.

Do you have what it takes to design something that strains the eyeballs, is disproportioned, or is absolutely user unfriendly? If you do, then read the list of rules and get started. Keep in mind that there will be one winner, so don’t be upset after its all said and done if you don’t win. The plus side however of this competition is that it gives you a good chance to get some traffic and exposure. We will be leaving the voting up to everyone that reads and comments on this blog as well as HostGator employees.

Website Contest Rules

  • You may use a previously built website as long as it is yours.
  • You MUST copy the code below and put it on the main page of your site.
  • No site with any type of illegal content or questionable material will be accepted.
  • Once your site is ready, you need to comment on this post with the web address to your site, so people can see.
  • HostGator Staff will then judge based on viewing and your comments. More Comments can be found on the HostGator Forums. The winner will be announced on January 4th.

Wow. How are the judges going to survive looking at these sites. It’s going to be like looking at a piczo.com user page 100 times!

    Jordan, anywhere you want!

Andrew, believe me we see sites everyday that are ugly. Its amazing when you look at a site and say, “that is really bad”, and come to find out they offer web design. So I think the people here at HostGator will recognize true ugly talent when they see it.

I expect things to get rolling by next week once people have made their sites. Feel free to write about it and let people know. The more submissions the more fun this will be.

One comment I forgotten, the UGLIEST PAGE would also be the SUSPENDED PAGE and HOSTGATOR.HTML which looks like a Spam site in the default pages.

That is something I am nominating.

    Don’t trust me? try http://suspended.hostgator.com/?domain=azrin.info and http://www.azrin.info/hostgator.html

THAT IS REALLY WORTH Hostgator time to rework on.

I hate to be one of the first to submit, because people will take some of my ideas and make them worse. Oh well, here it is http://www.upperweather.com/ugly.html
Make sure to try hovering over the links, and have your speakers on.

No worries Brodie. Acknowledged that yours is the first. Hey, at least you are paving the way! Thanks for the submission!

I dunno, does the website has to have broken code and stuff like that? or should it be only aesthetically unpleasant? or should it be about something really gross? or should the contestants go wild and make a website from hell?!

  15. By Justin G on Dec 25, 2007 | Reply

Sheesh Kebab, you can do anything with it that you like. The key is to make something that will cause people to see something unique as to its ugliness. It can even be something that is ugly in an orderly fashion. It is up to you.

    (if it doesn’t work: http://www.banlieusard.info/worst/index2.html)

I’m almost shy to show it.. i even drew the hostgator logo in FLASH and fit it in my colorful ugly site !

    Enjoy.. or not ??!

    HAHAHA!

http://www.banlieusard.info/worst/ is DEFINITELY the best ugly site. The music almost tops the cake until you see the random picture of Whoopi with the muppets. THAT is comedy!

    Congrats on the win PL!

What a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe having the ugliest web site in the world could be a point of difference?

I wish people would focus on content rather than looks. Google is not a pretty site but basically runs the Internet. Food for thought?

  27. By Wedding Celebrant Bribie Island on Oct 11, 2008 | Reply

Looks aren’t the whole story, but a crappy looking web site damages the company behind it in terms of credibility.
