Hi Greg,

Honestly unless you're very technical and know your way around linux / ssh I wouldn't recommend going to school to learn what we do. I don't think we have a single admin that's learned what they know from any schooling.

Being a system admin is really something that's got to be self taught or from years of hands on training.

I'm looking for some guidance regarding a career change I'm considering. I currently own a business unrelated to anything tech and before I sign on the dotted line with any of the more well known schools i.e. Devry, etc., I'd like to just get some ideas from those of you in the industry. I'm not a kid, 47, a vet with a background in military intelligence (please no oxymoron jokes...). I know most of the career counselors at these schools are paid to tell me what I want to hear, I just want to know the straight scoop. Thanks in advance.

He may want to apply for another job at one of the fortune 500 companies here. If his skill set is in demand enough, he may get hired and "imported" into the US. These big companies have expensive immigration lawyers and pocket deep enough to bring in anyone they like.

(I guess if you guys "love" him enough you'd let him go, :=).

I totally like your idea about letting everyone that wants in US to buy a house and become a citizen. Unfortunately though, most US people are becoming suspicious of immingrants and want as little immigrants as possible. These same people seem to forget though that their great grandpas and grandmas came were not born in the US.
I just read some articles on Thomas Edison, and I found out that his parents were irish immigrants. I wonder what would have happened if US had the same immigration procedures in the 19th century as it has today. Maybe Edison would have invented his cool stuff somewhere else...
If the policy does not change to allow skilled people to come to the US and create US jobs and US tax revenues, then US would become a third world country within several decades.
Anhyways, can't you apply for an H1B for your CTO? Does he have a bachelors/masters degree?

Dave... tell the United States to shove it. You're earning an awesome wage. You don't need the U.S government's approval.

Keep doing your thizzle!

Well, I'm a US citizen, and I'm not finding that Canada's immigration laws are so easy, either, even for responsible, hard working people who will not be a burden on the system.

David J,

You are sooooo late in news, man.

Work visas for people with a college degree or equivalent start on October 1st each year. People can apply starting April 1st.

In 2006, the quota was reached in August.

This year, the quota was reached BEFORE THE END OF THE FIRST DAY!!! That is: people who got their application in on April 1st 2007, to be allowed to start work on October 1st 2007 had to go through a lottery because there were more applications in on the first day than slots open for the year.

Currently, there are no more slots. The only thing people can do is wait until April 1st 2008 to try and get a spot to start working on October 1st 2008.

As a business owner, I can tell you I would outsource before waiting a year and a half to get the employee in legally.
